There are so many useful things that you can do that make a REAL difference, such as:
- Email the Vice-Chancellor
- VC@unimelb.edu.au
- and Russell Elliott (head of Property and Campus Services) russell.elliott@ unimelb.edu.au
- BEFORE Sept 10th and let them know you want clean energy on campus (cc your email to environment@union.unimelb.edu.au so we know how many people are doing this). This is the most effective thing you can do as they really do listen to people who take the effort to write to them! You can write whatever you want in the email, but please make sure you include:
- 1. I want the University to go carbon neutral, and the best way to start is to purchase 100% Green Power immediately
- 2. At the very least, the University should spend all money they will save on energy efficiency measures on Green Power.
- Sign the petition to Switch our Uni to Green Power - at the Food Co-op or outside the Enviro Office on the noticeboard (first floor of Union House). It is a very effective way to show the VC that students really support green power. If you think you can get your friends or classmates to sign the petition also, email environment@union.unimelb.edu.au and we will email you a copy of the petition.
- Buy Green Power for your own home. Visit http://www.greenelectricitywatch.org.au/ (run by non-profit organisations) to find the best provider and find out why it's so important. Buying Green Power is one of the best things you can do to reduce your environmental impact.
- Come to meetings of the Climate Change Collective! Mondays 5.30pm at the Enviro Office. Anyone can join, whether you know lots or only a little about climate change, it doesn't matter. We need as many people involved as possible.
- Carry around a black balloon of carbon consciousness. All members of the CCC are carrying black balloons whenever they walk around campus, to provoke conversation about climate change. You can too! Drop by the Enviro Office to get yourself a black balloon and then whenever anyone asks you why you are carrying it around, talk to them about climate change!
- Write to your local Member of Parliament or councillor and ask them what they are doing about climate change. Is their office on Green Power? Do they have emissions reduction targets? To find your Victorian MP's contact details, go to http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/mlcs.html or to find your federal MP's contact details, go to http://www.aph.gov.au/whoswho/index.htm
- Visit the websites on the left to find out more things you can do.
